Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition that results in a faster life cycle of skin cells, thereby causing buildup on the skin’s surface. Symptoms include burning, itching, inflammation, and scaling. It is estimated that around 2% to 2.6% of the entire population of the US is affected [R].
Here is a list of natural psoriasis treatments:
1. Bile Acid
A fairly substantial clinical trial done with 800 psoriasis patients showed that bile acid supplements (dehydrocholic acid) taken orally cured psoriasis completely in 79% of the patients after just 1 to 8 weeks. For patients with acute psoriasis, it cleared 95% of the symptoms. For those who had chronic cases, bile acid supplements completely relieved all symptoms in 58% of the patients after 2 years, which is a much higher success rate than 6% on standard treatment [R].
It has been recently reported that bile acids cause cancer; however, there has been no proven link between bile salts supplementation and cancer. Most studies, however, have looked at increased production of bile acids due to a high-fat diet rather than bile acid supplements [R].
2. Thunder God Vine
100 patients were asked to participate in another clinical trial showing that thunder god vine worked as well as the standard psoriasis medication called acitretin and had relatively fewer side effects. In a study done on the effects of Chinese herbs for children with psoriasis, it was reported that thunder god vine is pretty beneficial [R].
3. Aloe Vera
Aloe vera helps hasten healing by hydrating the affected area and reducing inflammation.
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study comprising of 41 psoriasis patients, aloe vera treatment reduced redness, pain, and peeling by a whopping 72.5%. This study was published by the US National Library of Medicine in May of 2005 [R].
A 3-month study was done on 50 psoriasis patients which reported that neem leaves extract used alongside standard medication can relieve symptoms better than solely using standard medication [R].
One clinical trial with 59 patients suffering from eczema and psoriasis reported that the topical application of bilberry seed oil can relieve symptoms of scaling, itching, and redness, and overall improve the severity of the condition [R].
Foods rich in probiotics are proven to improve digestion, cleanse the body from toxins, reduce inflammation, and boost the immune system. All of these benefits are greatly beneficial in treating psoriasis.
When consuming probiotics, it’s important to choose organic and cultured dairy, such as yogurt and cultured vegetables. There have been anecdotal shreds of evidence of the effectiveness of probiotics treatment against psoriasis. One man who lived with psoriasis on his heels for 10 years stated that the standard medication did not provide relief from his symptoms, but when he started consuming probiotics for an entirely different illness, his psoriasis cleared up [R].
We strongly advise you to have regular check-ups with your doctor and lab tests (blood, kidney, and liver) at least once every four months if you decide to take any herbal medicine or supplement mentioned in the list for long-term.
